Kokatana - Japanese woodworking knives

The origin of Kensaki Knife

The origin of Kensaki is related to a Tokyo carpenter named Nomura Sadao(野村貞夫). When he came to work in the Kansai region of Japan before World War II, he saw local carpenters building sukiya houses using kensaki-shaped Usunomi or Shirakaki to finish the tennon shoulders after using Douzuki saw.

After World War II, the carpenter wanted to develop a Kensaki knife suitable for finishing the tennon shoulders of large wooden structures since the Shirakaki is too small and thin; and the handle of the chisel inevitably hits the 90 degree jig. After communicating with Tsuchida Ichiro and Ochiai Uichi (Chiyotsuru Nobukuni), Carpenter Nomura Sadao jointly developed the now popular Kensaki knife.
