Guide to Japanese Hammers

Japanese Ana-daiku hammer handle size by Tsuchida Ichiro

I created a pdf file based on the information in the book for printing. The picture below is a preview. If you print on A3 size paper, the image size is equal to the actual size. (There will be errors depending on the printing settings)

Guide to Key Dimensions of Japanese Ana-daiku Hammer Handle Ends

The key dimensions are shown in the figure below. ( The hammer in the picture below was made by Kouzaburo. Weighs about 330g. The handle was probably made by Tsuchida Ichiro.)
The book records the original words of Ana-daiku regarding this size: "肘を締めて振る玄能は、指一本。肘を上げて振る玄能は、指一本半から二本半。つまり大玄能は指二本ほど、それ以外は指一本。"
Means “ If the hammer can be used without opening the elbow, the dimension is one finger width. If the hammer needs to be swung with the elbow wide open when used, the size should be one and a half to two and a half finger widths. In other words, the size is two finger widths in the case of a large hammer and 1 finger width for other hammers.”
The following three pictures are examples. The first hammer is a 750g large hammer. The middle one is a 330g hammer. The third one is a 110g small hammer.
