This chisel comes from a retired carpenter in the Tokyo area and is a tool that the carpenter uses regularly. It is a well-made chisel, and its laminated construction of steel and soft iron shows the craftsman's skill. (This is also the ideal lamination for common carpenter chisels.)
The sides of the chisel are almost covered with steel, this can effectively reduce the friction between the side of the chisel and the wood when making the mortise hole.
In addition, the steel is thicker in the middle than on the sides, which increases the strength of the chisel. This is similar to the effect achieved with the "Yamairi" chisel.
