Additional Information: This is a chisel that has seen long-term use. I have re-sharpened it; the bevel is finished to approximately 400 grit, and I’ve polished the ura (back) to about 3000 grit. Given the remaining length of the blade and the thickness of the steel, this tool still has a considerable service life ahead of it. However, it will require a careful, thorough sharpening before you put it to use.
When I first acquired this chisel, I was a bit puzzled by its extraordinary thickness. I consulted with Mr. Tsuchida, and he clarified that this is a specialized chisel used by 'Dai-ya' . Its primary purpose is to quickly rough out the central mortise (the 'throat') of a Japanese plane body. Nowadays, this specific task has been replaced by specialized machinery as shown in the video at 9 seconds... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkeuxwQXltE
