Additional Information: This tool has seen minimal use and the blade is in good condition, fitted with an ideal handle. I have given it a basic sharpening up to approximately 2000 grit. It was purchased from the descendant of a carpenter in the Kansai region.
This is a Chouna (adze) featuring the traditional 'Hon-moro-ba' (本モロ刃) blade profile. Its defining characteristic is that the position of the blade tip sits closer to—or rather, directly on—the centerline of the handle. Compared to modern Chouna, this Hon-moro-ba type generally features a longer and heavier blade (though this specific blade length is similar to that of a modern Chouna). This design is perfectly suited for removing large amounts of wood, making it a highly efficient tool for rough shaping.
Regarding the specific terminology for this blade type, there are two distinct names derived from different authoritative sources. The Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum refers to it as 'Ryoha':
“ 釿の刃は主に両刃で、刃の側面がヒツの中心線に対してほぼ左右対称の形をしている両面のものと、一方に片寄っている片面のものとがあります。”
while Mr. Tsuchida describes it as 'Honmoroha' in his article.
