Additional Information: Although this chisel is secondhand, it’s in nice condition and comes from a retired miya-daiku (traditional shrine and temple carpenter) in the Kansai region. I’ve already done the foundational sharpening, bringing both the bevel and the ura up to a 1000-grit finish.
In Japan, this type of chisel is commonly called a komisen nomi, which is specifically designed for cutting deep mortises. It features a tsuba (collar/guard) near the handle; because this chisel can be difficult to extract when working in deep holes, the tsuba is added so you can tap it to easily pull the chisel out.
