These blades is exquisitely forged with a perfect laminated structure, and the soft iron (jigane) of the chipbreaker shows a subtle, beautiful grain pattern. What makes this piece particularly exceptional is that the wooden body (dai) was crafted by Soichiro Ito, the preeminent dai-ya (plane block maker) in the Tokyo region, using high-density, naturally seasoned Japanese white oak (shirakashi). You can view some of the specialized tools Master Ito used at this Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum link: [Link]

A more detailed profile of this dai-ya can be found in the book Creating a plane platform—the establishment and development of a platform in Tokyo, though it is currently sold out.
