Additional Information: This chisel is in good condition, unused. To assess the quality of the steel, I have performed a basic sharpening: the bevel and the ura (flat back) have both been sharpened to 1,000 grit. The steel is very likely White Steel (Shirogami) with a moderate hardness, making it well-suited for working with harder woods. It features a unique design: while the neck and handle are standard Tataki (striking chisel) dimensions, the blade length is intentionally shorter. This gives it the handling and feel of a Chu-Tataki chisel.
While the chisel may appear rugged or unrefined on the outside, this is actually a deliberate, specialized finish called Uchidashi“打ち出し”. Instead of using grinders or files for a smooth finish, the smith shapes the body entirely through low-temperature hammer forging.
