Here's a description of the chisel from the Takenaka Woodworking Tool Museum:
“The cross section of the tip is rectangular. The shape of the tip can be either a flat surface with vertical and horizontal lines carved into it, or a V-shaped cut in the center. When drilling a hole through a material, the hole is dug about halfway from both sides with a chisel, and then punched out from one side with the Striking chisel.”
