Here's a question: why do they put bamboo nails in their mouths? Is it because it looks cool and craftsman-like? Is the trick to put saliva on the bamboo nails? Both answers are incorrect. The real reason they put them in their mouths is actually as a result of pursuing efficient work that is possible only in an unstable place, such as hammering a large number of nails on a roof.
If you observe craftsmen working on the roof closely, they will be sitting on a triangular stool, holding a hammer in their right hand and holding down a roof board with their left hand, in an extremely unstable position. If they were to grab a bamboo nail with their left hand in this position, it would be unstable and would inevitably stop the work, and they would not be able to hammer in a huge amount of bamboo nails quickly.
That's where the mouth comes in. The craftsman carefully adjusts the direction of the bamboo nail in his mouth, and prepares it with the pointed end facing towards him. When it's time to hammer it, he uses his right hand, which is holding the hammer, to pinch the bamboo nail in his mouth with his index finger and thumb, while still holding the hammer. With that in mind, he lightly drives the nail into the board with the handle of the hammer (the part you hold, this is why a non-slip metal plate needs to be installed at this part of the handle.), and then continues to drive the nail in with the hammer.
This way, you don't have to go through the trouble of using your left hand to align the bamboo nail, hold it with your left hand, and hit the hammer with your right hand, and you can hammer the nail in more quickly and your left hand free.
This makes installation very fast, it takes less than five seconds to drive one nail in. With thin こけら葺(Kokera Buki) shingles (about 3mm thick), skilled craftsmen can grab one nail from mouth to  hand and finish driving it in in just 1-2 seconds.
