Additional Information:
Additional Information: It is a pre-owned tool from a retired carpenter. He mentioned that it was originally purchased at Tsuchida Hamono, so I personally brought the plane to Mr. Tsuchida for verification. Mr. Tsuchida confirmed that it was indeed sold at his shop. He identified the blacksmith of the blade as Komori and the dai -maker as Ito Soichiro (伊藤宗一郎,1922-2017) from the Tokyo area.
Ito Soichiro was a renowned dai maker from the Tokyo suburbs and the master who taught Mr. Noboru Tsuchida the art of 'Dai-uchi' (block-making). He was widely celebrated as a master craftsman whose blocks were legendary for “ does not loose” and “does not go crazy”. More of his works and information can be found in the book “Creating a plane platform—the establishment and development of a platform in Tokyo.”
Mr. Tsuchida Noboru told me that his father, Tsuchida Ichiro, used to request that Ito Soichiro leave no stamps or marks on the plane blocks he produced. As a result, this block is entirely unmarked.
