Additional Information: It was used for a period before being put into storage. There was some surface rust that developed over time, which I have removed. With plenty of usable steel remaining, it still has a long working life ahead. Sourced directly from the descendant of a retired carpenter in the Tokyo area. I have performed a basic sharpening, the bevel to 1000 grit and the Ura (back) to 1000 grit.
During sharpening, it is clearly noticeable that the steel is quite hard, and the jigane is noticeably harder than that of most post-WWII chisels made with modern soft iron. Given these characteristics, it is likely best suited for working softwoods.
