Additional Information: This is a rare, large Western-style scythe. Although it is unused, it has developed surface rust on the blade from being displayed on a tool shop wall for a long time, so it will need sharpening before use.
I discovered it at a specialty knife shop in the Kanto region. The previous owner, who collected it, has passed away. The current owner told me it was a piece from the previous owner's youth, but they can no longer provide any information about the blacksmith who made it. It could have been crafted by either a Japanese or a Western blacksmith.
That said, the blacksmith was clearly highly skilled. The scythe features a sophisticated design with a thickened spine, showing only minimal file marks. Most of its shaping—including the urasuki section—was achieved purely through masterful hammer forging.
