Additional Information: These two kanna were sourced from a retired carpenter in the Kansai region, and it’s clear they were among his most frequently used tools. The carpenter's sharpening skills were exceptional—both the bevels and the ura (flat sides) are perfectly flat. It took me less than five minutes to reveal the beautiful grain of the jigane (soft iron jacket). For the 35mm blade, the jigane appears to be watetsu.
Although the blacksmiths remain anonymous because these were stamped with wholesaler brands, both planes beautifully embody the “beauty of utility” —a grace born from tools being cherished and used over a lifetime.
