Additional Information: This pre-owned chisel exhibits craftsmanship and materials clearly characteristic of the late 19th-century. It was previously owned by a Miyadaiku (shrine and temple carpenter). I have performed a restorative sharpening on the tool: the bevel has been sharpened to 8,000 grit using natural whetstones to better reveal the beautiful texture of the Watetsu, while the ura has been sharpened to 1,000 grit. Judging by the wear on the handle, the remaining blade length, and the thickness of the steel, it is evident that this was a frequently used and cherished tool in the master's collection. It is highly likely that this chisel was passed down to him from a previous generation. During sharpening, the steel provided a distinctively hard feedback, making it exceptionally well-suited for softwood.
It comes from the descendants of a retired Miyadaiku from Kamakura. The chisels from this Miya-daiku currently listed on the website are as follows:
